Crude oil markets reversed sharply lower during the week of April 5 through April 9, 2026, as traders shifted from aggressive risk pricing to rapid liquidation. After surging the previous week on geopolitical tensions, May WTI crude failed to sustain higher levels and entered a wide, volatile range. Prices reached a weekly high of $117.73 before collapsing to a low of $91.05. As of Thursday, crude is trading at $98.39, down $13.15 or -11.79% for the week so far.

This sharp reversal follows last week’s breakout rally, where supply fears tied to Middle East tensions drove prices higher. The current price action suggests that traders are now reassessing those risks while locking in profits after an extended move.

Profit-Taking and Position Liquidation Drive Sharp Selloff

The dominant theme this week has been aggressive profit-taking after last week’s nearly 12% rally. Markets that move too far, too fast often face sharp corrections, and crude oil is showing that pattern clearly.

Traders who bought into the geopolitical premium began exiting positions as no immediate supply disruption materialized. While tensions remain elevated, the absence of confirmed outages or shipping interruptions reduced the urgency to hold long positions at elevated prices.

This type of move is typical in fast-moving commodity markets. Once upside momentum slows, large funds tend to unwind positions quickly, triggering a cascade of selling. The result is a steep decline that…

The result is a steep decline that feeds on itself as stop-loss orders are hit and weaker longs exit the market.

Volume and volatility both increased during the selloff, reinforcing the idea that this is not a slow drift lower, but rather a forceful repositioning.

Oil Prices Projections Shift as Supply Risk Premium Fades

Last week, traders priced in a worst-case scenario tied to Middle East supply disruptions, particularly involving key shipping routes. That risk premium pushed crude above $110. This week, that premium has been partially removed.

The market is now transitioning from a fear-driven pricing model back toward a more balanced view of supply and demand. While risks remain, traders are no longer willing to pay extreme premiums without confirmation of actual disruption.

At the same time, high prices themselves are starting to weigh on sentiment. Crude above $110 raised concerns about demand destruction, particularly in price-sensitive regions. As prices pulled back, those concerns eased slightly, but they remain part of the broader narrative.

This shift highlights a key market reality: supply shocks can drive sharp rallies, but without follow-through, those rallies are difficult to sustain.

Technical Breakdown Signals Weakness Below Key Momentum Levels

From a technical perspective, this week’s price action shows a clear rejection of higher levels. The failure to hold above recent breakout zones suggests that buying pressure has weakened significantly.

The sharp pullback represents a deep retracement of the prior rally, indicating that sellers have regained control in the short term. Wide trading ranges and extended price swings point to instability rather than strength.

Traders are now watching for signs of support formation. If the market stabilizes and forms a higher low, it could signal that the broader uptrend remains intact. However, continued weakness would suggest that a deeper correction is underway.

This type of volatility often marks a transition phase, where the market searches for balance following a major repricing event.

Trend Indicator Analysis

The main trend is up according to the weekly swing chart and moving average analysis. However, as of Thursday’s close, the market is in a position to post a potentially bearish closing price reversal top at $117.63. This chart pattern will not change the trend to down, but if confirmed, it could trigger the start of a 2 to 3 week correction. A trade through $117.63 will negate the chart pattern and signal a resumption of the uptrend.

My long-term range is $54.97 to $117.63. Its retracement zone at $86.30 to $78.91 is the primary downside target. With the trend up, new buyers are likely to re-emerge on a pullback into this zone. If it fails to hold, prices could collapse into the 52-week moving average at $65.26 at some time in the future.

This week’s range is wide enough to also be my short-term range. It is $117.63 to $91.05. When prices collapsed earlier in the week, they tested $91.05, a little short of our buy zone at $86.30 to $78.91. The subsequent rebound from this level has shifted the focus to its pivot at $104.34. We’re going to learn a lot about near-term trend expectations in crude oil, based on how traders react to this pivot.

Weekly Technical Forecast

The direction of the Weekly May Crude Oil futures contract for the week-ending April 17 is likely to be determined by trader reaction to $104.34.

Bullish Scenario

A sustained move above $104.34 will signal the return of buyers. This move could create the upside momentum needed to challenge the contract high at $117.63, the nearby high at $118.80 and multi-year highs at $123.50 and $130.50.

Bearish Scenario

The inability to overcome $104.34 and a sustained move under this pivot will indicate the presence of strong selling pressure. If the selling is strong enough, we could see a break into the major target zone at $86.30 to $78.91. New buyers could show up on a break into this area so be careful selling weakness.

If the selling persists and $78.91 is taken out with conviction then look for the break to possibly extend into the 52-week moving average at $65.25.

Oil Prices Forecast: Cautiously Bearish Bias with Elevated Volatility

The near-term oil prices forecast has shifted to a bearish bias following this week’s sharp decline. The removal of part of the geopolitical risk premium, combined with heavy profit-taking, suggests that upside momentum has stalled.

However, volatility is expected to remain high. Geopolitical tensions have not been resolved, and any new developments could quickly reintroduce a supply-driven rally.

In the short term, the market is likely to remain headline-sensitive, with sharp two-sided moves. Traders should expect continued wide ranges as the market balances lingering supply risks against softer momentum and positioning resets.

The key takeaway is that crude oil is no longer in a one-directional rally. Instead, it has entered a corrective phase where selling pressure dominates in the near term, but underlying risks prevent a sustained collapse.

Overall, the path of least resistance currently points lower, but conditions remain unstable, making disciplined risk management critical.

Technically, trader reaction to $104.34 will set the tone next week.
