Surging demand for artificial intelligence is driving a significant increase in global energy consumption. Projections for future data center energy use are high, prompting action from both private companies and public institutions.

Major technology firms are directing substantial financial resources and public relations efforts toward developing renewable energy sources to address their growing power requirements. However, this sector is also contributing to an expansion in fossil fuel infrastructure, raising questions about existing plans for reducing carbon emissions.

For instance, the data centers operated by Google alone consume electricity comparable to the usage of many entire counties. In 2024, these facilities used approximately 30.8 million megawatt-hours of power, representing a near doubling from levels recorded a few years earlier. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has attempted to counter this energy impact through notable investments in clean energy startups and a commitment of $10 million to a fund focused on grid reliability and clean energy projects.

That financial commitment represents only a small portion of Alphabet’s broader spending. According to a recent report from Cleanview, a market intelligence platform, Alphabet invested roughly $90 billion in capital expenditures in 2025 and plans to nearly double that to as much as $185 billion in 2026. The report indicated the majority of these funds are destined for data centers and the necessary power infrastructure. This expansion is not exclusively focused on clean energy, as Alphabet is also developing natural gas resources to support its generative AI operations.

One specific project involves a partnership with Crusoe Energy to construct a data center campus in North Texas. The campus plan includes both a wind farm and a large natural gas facility. Company representatives have publicly highlighted investments in geothermal, fusion, advanced nuclear reactors, and battery technologies, suggesting these projects outline their approach to the energy challenge. When questioned specifically about the strategic use of natural gas, however, the company declined to comment.
