According to a report from Oilprice.com, Europe’s airport industry group has warned that the region could experience a systemic jet fuel shortage within three weeks. The group, ACI Europe, indicated that this would occur if significant and stable flows through the Strait of Hormuz do not resume.
The organization cautioned that a continued disruption would leave airports and airlines with insufficient supply at the beginning of the peak summer travel period. In communication with European Union officials, ACI Europe stated that such a shortage would rapidly affect the entire aviation system and impact economic activity across the bloc. The group has requested that the European Commission monitor supply and production levels over the coming six months.
Approximately thirty percent of Europe’s jet fuel imports normally originate from the Gulf area. Signs of pressure are already emerging, with seven airports in Italy recently restricting access to jet fuel due to tightening supply. The region’s overall supply position offers limited capacity to absorb a shock, as it depends heavily on imported fuel and has constrained refining capability for jet fuel production.
Jet fuel prices have followed the trajectory of crude oil. Oil prices increased following the disruption, though they had retreated from their peak by the end of last week. Airlines have begun to transfer these higher costs to consumers via fuel surcharges and additional fees. Carriers are simultaneously preparing for increased summer demand, when fuel consumption usually reaches its highest level.
