Elon Musk isn’t exactly known for holding back his opinions on X (formerly Twitter), but the billionaire tech mogul just unleashed an attack on the government of his birth country after South Africa’s continued refusal to grant an operating license to SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink.
According to a fiery new post from the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, the regulatory blocks keeping Starlink out of South Africa have nothing to do with technology, infrastructure, or safety. Instead, Musk claims the blockade is entirely based on his race.
South Africa won’t allow Starlink to be licensed, even though I was BORN THERE, simply because I am not Black!
We were offered many times the opportunity to bribe our way to a license by pretending that a Black guy runs Starlink SA, but I have refused to do so on principle.… https://t.co/m6G1ZQcC1C

“Simply Because I Am Not Black”
In a post responding to a user discussing South Africa’s history of apartheid and current regulatory policies, Musk dropped his take regarding his attempts to bring high-speed satellite internet to the region.
“South Africa won’t allow Starlink to be licensed, even though I was BORN THERE, simply because I am not Black!” Musk posted bluntly to his millions of followers.
For context, South Africa enforces Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment laws. In the local telecommunications sector, the government generally requires internet service providers to have a mandated percentage (typically 30%) of ownership held by historically disadvantaged groups in order to secure a commercial operating license.
While massive global corporations often restructure or find local partners to navigate these requirements, Musk claims he was pushed toward a much shadier workaround to get Starlink off the ground, one he flatly refused.
“We were offered many times the opportunity to bribe our way to a license by pretending that a Black guy runs Starlink SA, but I have refused to do so on principle,” Musk revealed.
This practice, often referred to locally as “fronting,” is a highly controversial tactic where companies use a person of color as a mere figurehead to bypass B-BBEE regulations. Musk made it crystal clear that he has no intention of playing along with these politics, standing his ground stating, “Racism should not be rewarded no matter to which race it is applied.”
Musk closed out his social media rant with a direct condemnation of the local government officials enforcing the telecom rules.
“Shame on the racist politicians in South Africa. They should be shown no respect whatsoever anywhere in the world and shunned for being unashamedly RACISTS!” he wrote.
As Starlink continues to launch satellites and light up connectivity maps across neighboring African nations like Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Eswatini, there’s plenty of irony in this. The CEO of the company was born and raised in Pretoria, yet South Africa remains one of the few major dead zones on the continent for his groundbreaking network. And based on this explosive exchange, it doesn’t look like Musk is willing to compromise anytime soon.
