Allied Critical Metals [CSE:ACM] has reported a potentially significant expansion of mineralisation at its Borralha tungsten project in northern Portugal, as early drilling at a newly defined target suggests the presence of a sizeable breccia-hosted system with implications for future resource growth.
The Canadian-listed company said it had intersected more than 200 metres of tungsten-bearing mineralisation at the Venise Breccia target, located roughly 400 metres from the Santa Helena deposit that underpins its recently published preliminary economic assessment (PEA). While the true width of the intercept remains undetermined, the scale of alteration and mineralisation encountered is being viewed as a positive early indicator.
Initial geological logging identified zones of hydrothermal alteration and quartz-sulphide veining containing visible wolframite — the principal ore of tungsten — alongside molybdenite and chalcopyrite. The presence of these associated minerals points to the possibility of polymetallic mineralisation, a feature consistent with other breccia systems in the region.
High grade historic tungsten at Borralha
The results lend support to Allied’s geological model, which interprets Borralha as a broader district-scale system characterised by multiple breccia-hosted bodies rather than isolated vein structures. Historically, mining at Borralha focused on high-grade tungsten veins extracted via underground methods, with breccia-hosted mineralisation receiving comparatively little attention due to technical and processing limitations at the time.
Roy Bonnell, the company’s chief executive, said the latest findings reinforce the strategic case for Borralha as a long-term tungsten asset. “We are encouraged by these early results and continue to believe the project has the potential to become a meaningful new source of tungsten,” he said, noting that prices for the metal have remained above $3,000 per metric tonne unit in recent weeks.
Tungsten, prized for its hardness and high melting point, is widely used in industrial applications and defence technologies, placing it firmly on the list of critical minerals for western economies seeking to reduce reliance on dominant suppliers. Against that backdrop, the prospect of expanding a European-based resource carries geopolitical as well as commercial significance.
Allied’s PEA is based on Santa Helena Breccia
The Venise target lies outside the current mine plan outlined in the PEA, which is based solely on the Santa Helena Breccia and envisages an initial 11-year operation. As such, any additional mineralisation identified at Venise could represent upside beyond the existing development scenario, potentially extending mine life or supporting a larger-scale operation.
However, the company cautioned that the findings remain at an early stage. No assay results have yet been released, and visual identification of mineralisation — while encouraging — is not a substitute for laboratory analysis. The continuity, grade and economic viability of the system will require further drilling and detailed evaluation.
The current work forms part of a fully funded 20,000-metre drilling programme aimed at expanding the project’s resource base, upgrading inferred resources to higher-confidence categories and assessing broader optimisation opportunities. Drilling is ongoing and is expected to advance towards the interpreted centre of the breccia body.
The Venise Breccia could be very exciting
The Venise Breccia itself is not a new geological concept. It was documented in underground workings and academic studies dating back to the 1970s and 1980s, but has not previously been tested systematically using modern exploration techniques. Allied’s approach — combining historical data with contemporary drilling and modelling — reflects a wider industry trend of revisiting legacy mining districts with improved technology.
For now, the market response is likely to hinge on forthcoming assay results, which will provide a clearer picture of the deposit’s economic potential. Yet even at this early stage, the scale of the intercept and its proximity to existing infrastructure suggest that Borralha’s growth story may be far from complete.
