Eddie Vedder just kicked off his very first-ever solo tour in Japan, starting in Nagoya. After Pearl Jam’s runs back in ’95 and ’03, this felt like both a long-overdue return and a brand-new chapter.
The night opened with Brain Damage by Pink Floyd, sliding right into Sometimes—a longtime fan-favorite in Eddie’s solo shows. From there, he mixed heartfelt covers like Keep Me In Your Heart with PJ staples like Just Breathe.
Early in the set, fans started calling out to him. Eddie smiled, threw out a greeting in Japanese, then said in English: “It’s been a long, long time since we last played Japan… and I’m really happy to be here. I’m glad we’re here together,” before jumping into I Am Mine.
After Wishlist, he introduced Hide Your Love Away with: “This is a song I played for a film with Sean Penn.” Leading into No Ceiling, he dropped a few words in Japanese, then added: “Here are some songs from Into The Wild.” Later, after Can’t Keep, he laughed and said: “I thought you’d be a super quiet crowd—but you’re singing everything. It’s beautiful to be here.”
The set kept rolling with a powerful Parting Ways and acoustic staples like Small Town. Before Man Of The Hour, he got reflective:
“Sometimes I think about the end of life and what it all means… this is a song about a complicated relationship with a father.”
Immortality hit hard as always, followed by an emotional Corduroy, kicked off with an acoustic improv. At one point, Eddie even snapped a photo with a kid in the crowd.
He then dedicated Better Man to that same kid, joking: “Can’t find a better kid,” before blending into the usual Save It For Later tag. At the end of the song, Eddie gave a shoutout to Kenji— a friend of Chad Smith, the guy who yells ‘Hey Ho Chad-o!’ at the end of Try off Earthling – who was in the crowd.
At one point, grinning, Eddie said: “Now let me introduce the band I’m touring with,” then played a backing track of Long Way while walking into the crowd, hugging fans up front.
As usual for his solo gigs, Porch closed out the main set. For the encore, he went with two covers: Rockin’ In The Free World (with a Millworker tag) and Hard Sun, bringing the night to a perfect close.
