The XXVIII General Latvian Song and XVIII Dance Festival will take place from June 30th to July 9th, 2028, the government decided on April 14.
The Law on the Song and Dance Festival stipulates that the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival – arguably the most important regular event in the country – is held once every five years.
In order to evaluate the best possible time to organise the Festival, the Latvian National Cultural Centre (LNKC) has compiled the opinions of the parties involved in the preparation of the Festival – artistic collective leaders, municipalities, non-governmental organisations, and other officials.
The first week of July 2028 has been chosen as the most suitable time for the Festival, justifying it by the seasonal nature of the activities of artistic collectives and the planning of private time of artistic collective members.
“The festival time needs to be confirmed so that it is possible to prepare for the Song and Dance Festival in a timely manner, including establishing a Festival Action Committee, creating a plan of events for the festival week, determining the festival venues in Riga and approving them with a government order,” said Minister of Culture Agnese Lāce (Progressives).
The planned date of the XXVIII General Latvian Song and XVIII Dance Festival has already been reviewed by the Song and Dance Festival Council, as well as at a meeting of the Song and Dance Festival Artistic Council.
