This week kicks off a near-record heat wave, with multiple days in the 90s in a row. That means your HVAC system will be working
extra hard to cool your house.
Local experts say now is the best time to check on your unit before it starts working even harder this summer.
Home service company Michael & Son recommends getting a maintenance check on your
HVAC system in the spring, especially if your AC was struggling last summer. A checkup can keep your AC from working too hard.
“You want to make sure everything, all the nuts and
screws are tightened, all the readings are coming out where they should be,” said Lou Rizkallah, Vice President of the Carolinas for Michael & Son. “When you don’t do that and you’re running it where it’s not
optimal, with our summers it can get you.”
You can also use a programmable thermostat and keep your home as cool as possible by closing blinds and
curtains. Make sure your ceiling fan is spinning counterclockwise, and don’t be afraid to use it!
Don’t forget to raise your thermostat a few degrees. Jeff Brooks with Duke Energy formerly told 5 On Your Side that for every two degrees you increase your thermostat this summer, you can save 5% on cooling costs per month.
Michael & Son said the best way to prevent AC problems is
to get a reputable HVAC company to come by and clean up your system.
Maintenance checks cost anywhere between $70 to $200, depending on the type of
unit and plan you select. Michael & Son said they are prepared for more calls this
week.
