Satellite imagery and IAEA observations reveal new enrichment infrastructure and reactor activity, hinting at a faster buildup of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal.
North Korea continues to build up its capabilities in nuclear weapons production, which, according to expert assessments, may be linked to expanding enrichment infrastructure and the intensification of key facilities at the Yongbyon nuclear complex.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi, during a press conference in Seoul, noted activity at the five-megawatt reactor as well as in the processing block and the light-water reactor, indicating a strengthening of the potential.

Assessment and Context
According to Grossi, the assessment of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities reaches into the tens of warheads. He also mentioned signs of activity, including the operation of the light-water reactor and the commissioning of other facilities outside Yongbyon.
IAEA has documented the construction of a new facility resembling uranium enrichment plants at Yongbyon. External analysis indicates a substantial expansion of enrichment capacity.
At this month’s Board of Governors meeting, Grossi noted that the agency is monitoring a new structure at Yongbyon, similar to the Kangson facility – another important nuclear complex near Pyongyang.
According to CSIS, satellite images from April confirmed these conclusions: completion of an enrichment facility, likely a plant able to produce material for military purposes.
Grossi also stressed that there is no evidence of Russian technology being used in the North Korean program. He added that the references in the cooperation agreement signed last year concern civilian projects, but final conclusions are still ahead.
Also, according to remarks by Lee Jae-myeong, the President of South Korea, North Korea annually produces nuclear material in quantities sufficient to create 10–20 warheads, despite the sanctions imposed.
All of this data underscores the importance of strengthening international monitoring and coordination of actions to control nuclear programs and ensure global security.
In light of these conclusions, it is worth focusing on strengthening dialogue among countries and supporting effective mechanisms for international moratoriums and verification to prevent escalation and strengthen global security.
