A tragic school shooting in Türkiye’s Kahramanmaraş province on April 15 resulted in nine fatalities, including eight students and one teacher, with thirteen injured, six of them in intensive care and three in critical condition.

The attack, perpetrated by an eighth-grade student, highlights a severe security crisis in the nation’s educational centers.

The gunman, identified as an eighth-grade student and the son of a former police officer, reportedly transported weapons and ammunition belonging to his father in his backpack. He used these to carry out the devastating attack against his peers and teachers before being found deceased at the scene.

This devastating event occurred merely 24 hours after another similar school shooting in Sanlıurfa, where an ex-student injured 16 individuals. This alarming succession of events underscores a deeply concerning trend of violence and insecurity within Türkiye’s schools, raising urgent questions about student safety and preventative measures in educational environments.

Following the Sanlıurfa incident, authorities swiftly suspended two police chiefs and two education directors. This decision came after revelations that the attacker had previously sent threatening messages via social media, leading to widespread criticism regarding the apparent lack of timely intervention and effective preventive protocols by responsible institutions.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed the Nation, vowing that all those responsible for any negligence leading to these tragedies would be held accountable under the full extent of the law. The Government has maintained constant communication with the President, providing minute-by-minute updates on the unfolding crisis as it attempts to manage growing social outrage over the vulnerability of youth within academic settings.

In response to the gravity of these events, thousands of teachers and professional associations organized large-scale protests in Ankara and Sanlıurfa. Marching under the powerful slogan “No to violence in schools”, demonstrators and opposition leaders vehemently demanded the resignation of Education Minister Yusuf Tekin, arguing that the current educational system lacks robust and effective protocols to adequately protect both students and staff.

The Minister of Interior announced a comprehensive investigation into the Kahramanmaraş incident and he designated four general inspectors from the civil administration and four from the police to delve deeply into the event, augmenting the efforts of existing prosecution and education teams.

Concurrently, the health administration reported that the Ministers of Education, Health, Justice and Family converged at the site of the shooting to coordinate the State’s immediate response. The Government has committed to examining all aspects of the events to determine responsibilities and has pledged to implement necessary measures concerning gun control and enhanced security in schools nationwide.

As the Nation continues its period of mourning for the departed teacher and eight minors, unions have issued stern warnings. They emphasize that the country’s social stability and the well-being of its younger generations are contingent upon a fundamental structural reform. This reform, they assert, must unequivocally prioritize security and mental health services over the rampant proliferation of weapons in society.

The Turkish Justice Administration has initiated immediate investigations into both recent school shootings. To protect the privacy of the victims and their families, a strict transmission ban on images related to the incidents has been imposed. Authorities have also strongly urged the public to refrain from succumbing to panic and to disregard any rumors or false information that may circulate on social media platforms.

Text reads: “I express my condolences to all citizens, all families, especially our dear little ones, affected by the armed attack in Kahramanmaraş, which has deeply shaken all of Türkiye. In this tragic attack, we have sadly lost our bright children and a dedicated educator.

I beseech Almighty God to grant mercy to the souls of the deceased; I send patience to their bereaved families and my condolences to the educational community. Our prosecutors of the Republic, civil and educational inspectors are carrying out the investigations immediately initiated with the utmost rigor. The incident will be clarified in all its aspects without fail.

Our ministers of national education, family and social services, interior, justice and health have traveled to Kahramanmaraş to personally care for the injured and our brothers affected by the event, share their pain and oversee the process. It is a duty of both conscience and morality that an attack like this, which has ignited a scorching fire in the heart of the entire nation, does not become material for political polemics or in search of an audience. Pain has no politics.

Given the sensitivity of the incident, I urge all sectors of society, starting with our journalists, to exercise due caution. In this process, I entreat our nation not to give credence to false or erroneous news and disinformation publications, and to heed the statements of relevant public institutions. I repeat my condolences to our children, families and teachers.”
