Ummmmmmmmmm…. I disagree. I’ll admit I’m not the most avid voter but I’ll not participate in allowing Ireland to send young Irish lads to fight America’s next oil war.
It’s a factually correct statement. No changes to the constitution are required.
Absolutely, if we’re not going to commit to a European Common defence, we should at least join NATO.
Poles and Latvians deserve to know we’re on their side and will help deter Russia. We’re not poor, we can’t simply expect central Europe to take all that burden without help from those of us far from the border.
There is a bit of debate on twitter from legal/constitutional experts about whether this is correct.
Bit of a moot point anyway, as there is no way this government has the political capital to push this through without a referendum.
Can someone tell him the fucken state of the army please ?
The warmongering tax parasites never waste a good crisis. They will be scaling up this forced narrative in the near future no doubt.
Will they have more than one till they get the result they want ?
Ah Lisbon treaty…….google doesn’t forget.
I definitely think we should NOT join NATO. It would be an outrageous decision even though I fully support NATO and its premise.
We have no incentive to join rather than being polite.
If we were to ever be invaded America would defend us out of principle and history and the UK would also defend us as it is a direct threat to them. We are not a big country and are not a threat to anyone. There is no point in us joining whatsoever.
We would need to spend about 8 billion a year on defense to join NATO.
If the government is gonna allocate money for that, there are much better uses I can think of.
That’s not to say we shouldn’t invest in our Navy or long range radar etc. We should. But 8 billion is a lot of money.
The NATO gravy train is just too irresistible for our jumped up politicians.
I put the very same post up earlier and it was removed.

Jesus Christ poll after poll shows that the support just isn’t there but no doubt they’ll railroad it through anyway.
I’m not totally against joining NATO but to even consider joining without a referendum is a fucking disgrace and worth a couple of protests IMO
I dunno about NATO, but I do know that as long as we have the triple lock, we give the likes of Russia a veto on our defence policy.
How on Earth could Ireland join NATO when one of the members occupies part of our island?
Do you really think joint military operations are an option?
As far as I can see it, Ireland shouldn’t ever join until we have what rightfully belongs to us.
Hysterical that people are so scared of Russia invading a neutral nation on the far side of Europe that we *need* to join NATO. Frankly there’s more pressing matters and FF/FG are better off focusing on them if they don’t want to be smashed to smithereens by SF.
I’m not against beefing up the defence forces to keep foreign military vessels out of our skies & waters and in case of future threats, but fuck joining a military alliance that has the likes of the US, UK, and France in it, some of the biggest warmongering bastards on this planet, that I can only laugh when they talk about a “rules based international order”. Can only see this as painting a huge target on ourselves for Russian aggression and international terrorism honestly, it would make us less safe.
Ireland would never join a military alliance with the UK while Northern Ireland is still a part of the UK there would be outrage
I really hope we do not join the mad eejits in NATO. The world is bad enough without more countries joining an anti Russia alliance with the US in it that brings us closer to nuclear annihilation
Whenever countries attempt to join an alliance that has the destruction of Russia as it’s primary aim, Russia gets upset. Is that a surprise? Since the break up of USSR NATO has moved East despite the assurances to Gorbachev. If you’re a neighboring country of Russia and you try to join NATO you’re in trouble, if you don’t you’re not.
Look what the US does to countries in the America’s it doesn’t like. Could you imagine if those countries joined a destruction of the us alliance?
Yeah. Em.
While they may be(or may not be) technically correct – such a decision would be about as popular as a can of surstrommung on a space station.
It’s a discussion that needs to be had, fair enough, but if it amends the international relations of the State, doesn’t it need to go to a vote?
One suspects we’d be spending 2% of our GDP on legal fees alone figuring it out.
FFG will do anything for a international pat on the head.
Any time they talk about anything that is not housing, they are another step out the door.
It’s a major pity the election is another few years away. They cunts should be run out the door.
Let’s give them 1B and say we’ll pay the rest later.
On a serious note, it is kinda BS we say we are neutral but if anyone hostile flies over us we call the uk or the eu. I mean we should be capable of some basic defence.
On the up side to having a proper navy and airforce maybe we wouldn’t have as many drugs coming ashore. Just a thought, no fact or research before anyone gets excited and goes tappy tap tap.
Brace yourself for a crisis never seen if that happens. The govt barely has money for housing let alone the healthcare.. where tf would they get the money to sustain a NATO alliance ?!!!! Delusional morons!!!
no to NATO!
No need, have 55 million Englishmen to use as shields and very little strategic importance.
What’s going on with this headline? MM knows perfectly well that Ireland will not be joining NATO via govt decision or referendum. He has absolutely no intention of running with that. So why is he saying all this via client media: look over here look over here.
It might be playing to an Eastern European audience that, if some commentators in Finland are to be believed, were outwardly cordial with Coveney but privately more demanding. In short, the price for the Protocol may be falling due.
MM is priming the pump. Like the salesman giving you low priced shite, mid priced reasonable and top priced inaccessible he reckons like most we’ll take the middle one. That would be closer integration into EU Defence. And he is entirely correct if he believes that is where we belong.
EDIT: Consider the above what we might usually expect. I’ll do an alt for the craic
Is this cunt fucking deaf?
It’s kinda funny that our government are now making intimations that they would be interested in joining NATO but their motivation has nothing to do with defence, if they cared about defence they would not have allowed our defence forces to end up in the sorry state they are currently in.
Their motivation is purely that they don’t want to end up the odd one out in Europe, our government have FOMO.
Firstly, sincere sympathies to all the victims of the current war in Ukraine.
It’s a very different take from our media but imho the two people most insulated from the war are Putin and Zelensky. They could sit down and agree a deal. A lot of real human soldiers (nevermind civilians) are being slaughtered everyday.
Look at all the shit the US is doing and ask do we really want to be a part of NATO with the US in it knowing that the US will murder and slaughter in the name of liberty whoever is in their way be it civilian or otherwise.
Imagine having a housing crisis and you talk about joining NATO to skirt the issue.
No Taoiseach, we are a neutral state …..you big silly.
We may not need a referendum, but we’d have protests out the arse if they did it without one.
So many in fact, that the next government in would probably have to withdraw us once they are in.
I’m not a big fan of our neutrality as it is, what with it being a case of not bothering our hole to do anything and depending on the Brits to deal with it, but I sure as fuck wouldn’t want us in NATO
Sounds very disingenuous and a bit of grandstanding and jumping on the bandwagon just because he’s there. Of all the nations who might need to join NATO, we’re not one of them. I also think this is laying the groundwork for an EU army.
It’s also mixed messages from what Leo said eight days ago:
