BERLIN — A 5-0 lead to start the game for the Hall Titans baseball team wasn’t enough to defeat the Berlin Redcoats baseball team.
After trailing Hall 5-0 entering the bottom of the first inning, Berlin outscored Hall 7-1 for the remainder of the game to overcome a shaky defensive start.
Kaiyo Sharkey started Hall’s scoring with a two-run RBI double to center field. Sharkey made it 3-0 when he scored on an RBI ground out from Quin O’Neill. Thomas Hussey scored Hall’s fourth run when Louis Sauer hit a ground ball and reached base via an error. Matthew Panarella scored Hall’s fifth run when Jeffery Niman was walked with the bases loaded.
Thanks to a few wild pitches from Hall, Berlin scored two runs as Jack Swanson and Matteo Modifica capitalized on mistakes from the Titans’ defense.
In the bottom of the second, Hall scored on a wild pitch to go up 6-2, with Maxwell Hanawalt scoring on a wild pitch.
The Redcoats responded with a three-run second inning to trail by one. Zach McAdam scored on a wild pitch, Cody Puzio scored on a passed ball, and Tyler Bennett scored on a Swanson ground out.
The next two innings saw no scores before Berlin took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Lavender reached home plate as Gavin Bennett hit a fly-ball double, tying the game. The Redcoats took the lead when Gavin Bennett scored as Tyler Bennett grounded out.
Berlin (4-2) will travel an hour on Saturday to face the Norwalk Bears (3-1) at 1:00 p.m.
On top of Southington suffering a 7-2 Wednesday loss to No. 6 South Windsor, three other local baseball teams suffered losses on Wednesday.
The New Britain Golden Hurricanes suffered a 7-3 loss to the Northwest Catholic Lions. New Britain held a 1-0 lead in the first inning and tied the game 2-2 in the third. The Lions scored three runs in the fourth to go up 5-2, and held onto their lead, scoring a run each in the sixth and seventh innings as New Britain scored just one in the seventh.
In the win, Ben Zybert hit 3-of-4 and scored two runs. In the loss, Christian Romer had two hits for the Golden Hurricanes. New Britain (2-4) is back on the diamond Friday, hosting East Hampton at 5:00 p.m.
The Newington Nor’Easters traveled to Meriden and suffered a 13-3 loss to the Platt Panthers. Platt scored five runs each in the first and fifth innings, and a two-run sixth inning led to the game ending in six innings.
In Platt’s win, Gio Dimatteo, Tyler Cioffi, Kenneth Marrow, and Luis Inoa, each had two RBIs. Caleb Datchuk had a team-high three hits. In the loss, Newington collected four hits and had an RBI each from Jack Hanrahan, Dylan Chamberland, and Lucas Malan. Newington (3-3) hosts Cheney Tech Friday at 3:45 p.m.
After starting the week with a 3-2 win against New Britain, the Plainville Blue Devils baseball team suffered a 4-2 loss to Farmington on Wednesday. Farmington gained a 1-0 lead in the third inning and Plainville tied it up an inning later. Farmington responded with a three-run fifth inning, leading by three, and Plainville could only score one more run, suffering a 4-2 loss.
Plainville was held to just four hits as Kyle Harris recorded the lone RBI. Farmington was also held to four hits in their win. Plainville (3-3) hosts Rockville Friday at 3:45 p.m.
