Ireland among worst in Europe for bathing water quality

  1. 77% of areas deemed suitable for bathing in Ireland were deemed of excellent quality.

Papers really do love to use the negatives

  2. It’s all those Dogs and Horses fault. Shiteing around the place thinking they own the joint. Would never be that bad if thee beaches were dog & horsie free.

  3. this is a weird one. considiring were an island, which is surrounded by beaches, we probably have the most dedicated bathing waters than other countries, but we dont have many inland bathing waters.

run off from farming and nutrification seems to be the cause. However, my local beach went from poor quality to excellent in the last 5 years and now has a blue flag. not so shabby

  4. Farming definitely has its issues but the main culprit here I imagine is county councils and Irish water.

We have I think 33 towns dumping raw sewage into water ways. It’s not for the lack of money or lack of construction companies but the lack of people willing to work for Irish water. Now before Amber Heard’s lawyer shouts hearsay I have heard from 6 companies alone that will not work for Irish water due to non payment. That’s a lot of companies considering I’m not even in that industry.

We need to build more treatment plants and stop being assholes to nature. The government talking outside both side of its mouth

Gov: you can’t burn peat you are destroying the planet
Gov: dumps millions of litres of untreated sewage into the water ways and seas.

  5. Over Covid, I started going to beaches, enjoying walks.

It wasn’t until I did that i realised how bad Bettystown beach is. The water isn’t just dirty, it’s got a horrific brown foam on the shoreline. When it was the only beach I visited, I thought that’s just how airish beaches kind of were, until I started visiting Skerries (for example) and realised the water on their beaches are crystal clear.

I think there’s a sewage pipe or something just off Bettystown beach, cause if you even drift down towards the mouth of the Boyne, or up towards Gormanston beach, it’s nowhere near as poisonous.
