PRINCETON, W.Va. (WVVA) – Since 1979, Bluestone Health Associates have been at the forefront of affordable access to quality care in Princeton and surrounding areas.
For the primary clinic on Thorn Street, a one-day event highlights their mission to keep southern West Virginia healthy.
“We’re trying to get people to come out to get annual wellness visits, well-child visits, blood pressure checks, A1C checks, and retina views,” said Heather Fain, quality transition of care coordinator for Bluestone.
The “Spring into Health” community day gives access to those needing immunization, women’s health screenings and eye exams for those suffering with diabetes.
Other Bluestone clinics, such as the one located in Kegley, are offering the black lung program with resources to coal miners in need.
According to the United Mine Workers of America, West Virginia has the highest rate for black lung disease, with approximately 4,136 black lung federal claims — all miners from the mountain state.
“Coalmining is so big for West Virginia and for the country, but it does take a big toll on their health. They’re breathing in dust, rock dust, coal dust, stuff like that and it gets in their lungs, and it’s trapped and it gets the point where it affects their ability to breathe,” said Kailyn Lawson, X-ray tech at Bluestone Health Center.
Black lung, diabetes and blood pressure are the key focuses for the Spring into Health event, providing preventive care options to those who may have limited access.
At the tents outside the clinic, you can also find resources for dental, dietary guidance and pharmaceutical needs.
