  1. I remember studying one midterm and listening to the CD that came with my exam papers. I had to put headphones in because my dad was asleep upstairs. It was the first and only time I understood what the fuck they were saying.

  2. I remember doing it for the Junior Cert and the volume was at max and people still couldn’t hear it so it was random guesswork.

  3. It’s so weird but I had an easier time understanding the Ulster Gaeilge than the Connacht Gaeilge or Munster Gailge [looking at you, Corcaigh agus an Cirraí…]

We didn’t have RTÉ at home [still trying to wrap my head around that notion myself. But my dad paid for free view and Bri’ish channels coz he wanted to watch the Cricket] and because we were all banned from the Internet I made do with BBC Alba. I can now speak a wee bit of Scots Gaelic as a result.

Rules around the Internet and TV were very strict at home. Unless it was clear we would fail if we didn’t have the Internet to help we weren’t allowed to use it. And because the CDs accompanied the books there wasn’t an immediate need to check out scannáin and documentaries on the ‘net.

The other excuse was that since my mam is okay as Gaeilge, she could help if we needed practice speaking. But the catch to that was when I wanted to speak at home As Gaeilge as much as possible I was told it wasn’t fair on my dad, who hasn’t a word of Irish, so it was just if my mam was up to it she’d help out.

This was all between 2011-2016 btw. I’m not *that* old haha.

  4. Hahaha I have a funny memory of this during the leaving cert. All was going semi ok in our listening then the ulster guy came on and did his spiol and when he was done everyone in our classroom burst out laughing looking at each other as no one understood a word

  5. There was always one Ulster guy who was like “HEY-na-ga-TAY” and you’re trying to figure out how that could be what he wants for dinner. There were never enough syllables.
