MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) — Madison families with transgender youth rallied at the state capitol, demanding UW Health reinstate gender-affirming care for transgender minors.
Dozens of protesters gathered to voice concerns that their children have lost access to medical care. UW Health stopped providing that care in January after the Trump administration threatened to cut Medicaid and Medicare funding to hospitals that continued.
Organizers say families are struggling to find care for their children.
“Some families are like ‘do we need to move to get care other places?’ It’s really scary. I think stuff like today, where we get to come together and there’s a community, bringing people hope and that’s what we have to do to make it through,” said Adrian Lampron, co-chair of Transgender Resistance Action Committee.
Local transgender rights organizations say they will continue pushing for change until UW Health reinstates access to care.
“I’m sure for trans kids right now this is really scary,” said Lampron, “I can’t even imagine what it would be like to be a kid or young adult and try and figures out what I’m supposed to do to get this care.”
