Biggest rail strike since 1989 as workers agree three-day walkout

  1. Yeah we are. 3 24 hour strikes spread across the week and weekend so nowhere near as disruptive as it could have been.

Now I can’t speak for anyone else especially as im employed by network rail so it’s specific to them. All we want is a fair payrise, job security and for management to look at other ways of saving money which so far they have flat out refused to do.
We don’t want to lose pay but the company and their refusal to move has forced our hand.

  2. Industry bosses: *cut pay in time of national economic crisis*

Workers: pls don’t, or we’ll strike

Bosses: *refuse to ensure job security*

    Workers: **strike**

    Bosses: *surprised pikachu face*

  3. Good luck trying to convince people to give up their cars and use public transport when said public transport is hardly ever running properly.

Not owning a car means the unions decide when you travel and when you don’t, which is a decision I’d rather make myself.

  4. Reckon there’s any chance of it disrupting the days in between the strikes? My girlfriend is arriving at Standsted on 24th and got no idea how she’d get here if there’s no trains

  5. Full support from the Dwairs down here in the far SW.

Fair pay and job security is worth fighting for, as are the unions rights to strike.

  6. Heck.

Power to them, just my rotten luck this falls on the tickets I bought last month for the time I booked off work a few months ago.

Going to see my nan for the first time since before lockdown, London towards Brighton. Going out on the Monday should still work, if busy, but my return is in one of the gap days later on, starting at midday.

Do you reckon that’ll still be a doable trip? I’ve got a ticket to a specific train/time, no problem how busy as long as I can actually fit aboard.

  7. Solidarity with all involved. Frankly sick of my own family members facing abuse and death threats while just doing their jobs, getting kicked in the ribs by the DfT’s incompetent takeover and then getting aggro online for striking to stop the people that make rail travel so unbelievably safe (maintenance etc) from getting sacked.

Everyone online is very happy to clamour for better working conditions and pay for themselves, to constantly ask “why aren’t we out in the streets over this?” with continued government fuck ups making our daily lives worse, but when an industry mildly conveniences them for a few days to seek improved conditions, there’s complete uproar. Absolutely pathetic tbh there’s no wonder the Tories are taking us for such fools

  8. We have the most amount of millionaires and billionaires today then we have ever had,
Money needs to start being filtered down to the working class

  9. Good. Other professions should strike too, namely civil servants and nurses. The government have been taking the piss out of taxpayers for too long.

  10. Booked a train this morning for the 25th due to the car journey being more expensive, just going anywhere seems to be harder these days.

  11. Pay rises should be AT LEAST in line with the cost of living increase each year.
Greedy fucking companies. It’s not enough to shaft service users with costs so ridiculous that it’s cheaper to fly than take a train, but they also shaft their employees too.

Make them bleed money, it’s all they care about.

I hope you guys get everything you deserve and more.

  12. I wish we had the RMT union. Ours never goes on strike, RMT never seems to come off striking about something or other.

  13. I fully support workers being paid fairly. My only issue is that the current railway system in this country is not fit for purpose and a pay rise for workers will just lead to it becoming even less accessible to consumers, as the cost will undoubtedly be passed on in a fare increase.

Our railways are already too expensive and unreliable. This will only make that worse. We need to overhaul the railway to make it viable for consumers.

Having used the railway in Europe, it blows my mind how other country’s can have cross country services for 5 euros and still manage to run effectively, regularly and efficiently. Yet we pay through the nose and I still end up using a rail replacement bus for half my journey because reasons.

  14. I cannot believe there is no mention in the top comments about the 25% reduction in ticket sales. I’m all for workers and unions, but it has to be sensible.

In that environment the Union are kidding themselves asking for no compulsory redundancies
and inflation matching rises. It’s Turkeys voting for Christmas in the long run.

  15. I’m all for it. Its about time workers reminded employers who has the real power. Its just a shame it requires ordinary people to be inconvienced

  16. Long NHS at A&E ,
    Highest Fuel Prices ,
    Highest Cost of Living ,
Failing to protect Care Homes ,
    Breaking Lock Down Rules ,
    Education system falling apart ,

Thank you Boris Johnson for running this country to the Ground.
