Opinion: Preferential treatment of white European war victims is a lamentable reality

  1. He should stick to his day job. You can’t just hand wave the fact Ukraine is a neighbouring country.

  2. Before the invasion many would associate Ukraine with the Euros, where we had the time of our lives even if we played poor. Even though we were in Poznan the link to that tournament just 10 years ago is stronger than any association we would have had with the middle east or North Africa. Of course we should help when we were welcomed in so thoroughly.

  3. Seemingly not in Africa , Asia or any Muslim country ….took zero Unkarine refugees in ….can you explain why that is ….are they the wrong colour ?

  4. We have a lot more in common with Ukrainians than we would Syrians for example. It makes integration alot easier on all sides. Bit saying it’s right or it’s wrong but it makes sense to take in larger number of people from culturally similar backgrounds.

  5. How many refugees from Muslim countries do Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, qatar and Jordan take, plenty of money there, I wonder how many Syrians or Yemenis they have taken in, same in Africa, Ghana Botswana, Mauritius, Senegal, Tanzania, peaceful countries

  6. “Dean Van Nguyen is a music journalist and cultural critic. His first book, Iron Age: The Art of Ghostface Killah, was released in 2019.”

    😭

  7. Gotta love some virtue signalling. I might care about it. But they care more and they care better. I wish I was more like them.

  8. For us it’s tangential to the EU and we are are viewed as a threat by the aggressor.

If refugees from countries not land bordering the EU want the same treatment as Ukranians then they’d be settled in a country bordering the one they fled. It’s actually non Ukranians refugees that have gotten preferential treatment.

BTW, Ukranians are in Ireland under a three year EU visa, so it’s not just an Irish stance, but an EU stance for a country that was invaded because it wanted to join the EU.

The EU and Ukraine had a verifiable work visa arrangement for years before the invasion so emergency three year visas wasn’t a major exception towards a nation that has started the application process for membership.

  9. The very same people who get pissed that there aren’t enough people who looked like them on TV, get pissed at Europeans taking a softer attitude to fleeing women and children from a war zone…who look like they do?

The Oppression Olympics currently going on in the west is a cancer.

  10. It is natural that we would be more concerned by events in a country closer to us where there are more ties etc. I think what we are doing is right.

However that doesn’t negate the fact that we have an inhumane system for refugees and which should have been done away with long ago.

I don’t think we should get into whattaboutery about other countries’ refugee policies, we should only be looking at what we should be doing. DP is not what we should be doing.
