Wounded Boris Johnson to call emergency Cabinet meeting as Tory rebels refuse to back down after worse-than-May vote

  1. Of course they refuse to back down. She resigned and got a better vote than he did.

If he stays on he makes May look good! And makes himself look like someone who is clinging to power no matter what.

  2. > While allies of Johnson have insisted his ballot victory should draw a line under the question of his leadership, Tory rebels as well as Labour are moving to apply further pressure on the PM by pushing a Commons vote on standards . . .

    > In its motion, to be tabled in the Commons on Tuesday, Labour will ask all MPs to vote to adopt a package of recommendations put forward by the Committee on Standards in Public Life in a report last year.

    > These include a call for Mr Johnson’s ethics adviser to “be able to initiate investigations into breaches of the ministerial code”.

The [conclusions of the committee’s recent report](https://www.reddit.com/r/unitedkingdom/comments/v3uamh/uk_anticorruption_chief_warns_on_need_for/ib0kqwy/) recommend an Independent Adviser, appointed “through an enhanced version of the current process for significant public appointments”, who should be empowered to determine whether a breach had taken place, as well as to initiate investigations.

This was ignored by the government.

Noting William Hague’s [comment in The Times](https://archive.ph/wC82T#selection-1023.0-1023.430):

    > Words have been said that cannot be retracted, reports published that cannot be erased, and votes have been cast that show a greater level of rejection than any Tory leader has ever endured and survived.

the Metro article quotes Tory MP Andrew Bridgen:

    > “The Prime Minister should now leave with honour and residual affection for what he has achieved.”

If the Tory rebels are serious about removing Johnson, the Labour motion provides a spectacular opportunity to demonstrate their intent.

  3. If the rebels were really concerned then they’d all resign the whip and go independent. This is also known as political suicide though and it is highly unlikely that any of the “no” voters have the balls to do so. What it would do is force a general election and they’d most likely be partyless in said election.

  4. He will just threaten them with censure, get rid of dissenters within the ranks & replace them with more incompetents and sycophants…… Gaslight gaslight gaslight.

That’s Johnson’s only political mantra and 148 of his own party are sick of it and pretty much the majority of the electorate too, according to the polls.

  5. I’m looking forward to a slew of risible policy announcements. You thought a return to imperial measurements was good? Get ready for white dog poo and gollywogs to be legal again

  6. Just imagine that 41% of his own party were desperate enough to vote against him, despite having no viable alternative. BoJo already is the scraping from the bottom of the barrel…

  7. I honesty hope he stays in that position until the next election then the tories would be doomed completely and someone else will be put in charge. Can only hope

  8. Bozo and his band of sycophant know the game is up, but they are so ideologically detached from the rest of the party this is their one and only shot of pushing through as much of their ideology as possible before they get kicked out.
The likes of Mogg, Bozo etc are like rabid dogs at a bowl of food guzzling as much as they can while snarling at others to stay away!

  9. If the 2 by-elections go how the bookies think they will, that will definitely be interesting.

And by interesting I obviously mean as funny as hell

“This is a very bad vote for the prime minister- 113 votes against her…The message today to Theresa May is that she has lost her moral and political authority” Jacob Rees-Mogg 13/12/2018

“It was a good victory for the Prime Minister, he won comfortably and now is getting on with business” (148 votes against) Jacob Rees-Mogg 7/6/2022

  11. They are all rotten!!! especially that evil incarnation priti patel!

    *edit
I am Not surprised at all with the down votes ! This idiots in power always needed bigger gullible idiots to keep voting on them ! :/

  12. Why would they back down, does he think he’s some kind of God, and that they should worship him. Does he also think everything will go back to what he interprets as normal, where he just takes everyone for granted.

  13. I want Boris and his sycophants to fight tooth and nail until the very end here, so that it completely ruins their chances in the next GE.

  14. I did some math.

Last night, 100% of Tory MPs voted and 40% told Johnson to sling his hook. He called that a decisive vote to remain.

In 2016, 72% of the public voted in the EU Ref and 52% voted to leave. That’s only 37% of the electorate but Johnson considered it a decisive vote to leave.

Fun Fact: It’s easier to do that maths than it is to count how many children Boris has.

  15. He has to stay. He’s toxic enough that he could drag the whole party back to hell.
If they replace him in their usual Doctor Who manner, then there’s a chance they could win the next GE.

If this blatant chancer, who once was loved by the idiotic masses, stays on, he’ll alienate the whole party (as they should be).

If he goes, then his successor will simply blame all the heinous shit they’ve done on him, and continue doing heinous shit.

Even the tories know he has to go.

Which tells me, he has to stay.

  16. Hope he clings on and continues to trash their reputation, he’s a great asset to anyone against the tories

  17. I’d say I can’t believe it, but I can totally believe it.

Why is the emergency cabinet meeting not about the actual emergencies we are having, such as the cost of living crisis and the energy crisis?

No, gotta focus on bailing out the leader.

  18. The only reason so many voted for him is because they know they only hold their positions to support him. Take him out of the equation, and they’re now accountable for stuff they get paid to do, but don’t know how to.

  19. I love how the BBC purposely finds useful idiots to interview at a rate of about 10-1 as opposed to anyone with a functioning brain. Their news coverage is as bent as the government.

Same message every time they go to an “interview the public” section – no real criticism, but lots “he got us through the pandemic guv” “no real alternative” “give him a chance to get on with the job”

EXACTLY the same fucking message coming from inside the cabinet, it is almost as if the cabinet and the BBC newsroom are one and the same thing.
