The NVSC said this is the first confirmed case in Lithuania this year and the seventh since 2022, when an mpox outbreak occurred in Europe.
An epidemiological investigation was conducted to identify individuals who had been in contact with the infected person. People were given the opportunity to be vaccinated and their health is being monitored.
Mpox is a contagious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It is not a highly contagious disease. Infection can occur through close physical contact with a person who has developed symptoms of the disease.
Symptoms include a rash, fever, headaches and muscle aches, severe fatigue, as well as swollen and tender lymph nodes.
To avoid getting infected, it is recommended to avoid direct contact with individuals showing mpox symptoms.
According to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, a total of 26,398 mpox cases have been reported in the EU since 2022, when the mpox outbreak began, through 12 March 2026.
