On Tuesday, April 21, the government approved a 40-million-euro support program to help residents purchase environmentally friendly vehicles, according to the Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM).

Support will be provided not only for the purchase of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars, but also for buyers of hydrogen-powered vehicles. The program specifically aims to support large families and families caring for children with disabilities.

The amount of support for the purchase of a single vehicle will range from 3,000 euros to 9,000 euros. This will depend on the type of vehicle and whether the resident has been awarded a Latvian Honour Family Certificate.

At the same time, a resident can receive an additional support of 2,000 euros if they scrap their old internal combustion engine vehicle by handing it over to a recycling company or donating it to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In the case of a donation, to qualify for the support, residents must obtain a document from the CSDD confirming the vehicle’s re-registration to a non-governmental organisation, a copy of the transit number plate, and a copy of the Ukrainian customs declaration for the vehicle’s import into Ukraine.

As in the previous support program, the price caps for vehicles eligible for support remain unchanged – up to 45,000 euros (base model and excluding VAT) for up to five-seaters and up to 60,000 euros (base model and excluding VAT) for six- and seven-seater vehicles.

Under the previous support program, worth 30 million euros, 6,467 residents purchased electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars. Among them were 1,281 holders of the Latvian Honour Family Certificate.
