Moi,

I recently moved into a new apartment with 3 other friends. The apartment is very new, they don’t have the traditional heater on the wall but use an air ventilation system to regulate the temperature. The thing is at night when others play games or music in their room, the sound can be heard through the air vent (we all closed our own door and the sound can be clearly heard from the vent). It basically turns into a speaker, broadcasting the other room’s noises. Has anybody experienced this kind of problem and has a solution for it?

The air vent at my place looks exactly like this one: [https://www.netrauta.fi/tuloilmaventtiili](https://www.netrauta.fi/tuloilmaventtiili-clik-100?utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_campaign=&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=s|pcrid|402785123898|pkw||pmt||pdv|c|&gclid=CjwKCAjwnZaVBhA6EiwAVVyv9OWjz4WStP_IsvwGSc5fTBt6vvdB30vNm70lukUdBoXYV6Fz_M1EXhoCqIgQAvD_BwE)

Blocking it is not an option since it is the only heat regulation in the room. Any helps is much appreciated.

  1. There is almost nothing you can do. This just means that when this apartment was built they didnt want to invest in sound dampeners to the air pipes. This is fairly common in new apartments which have been cheaply build. You could try to complain to ”isännöinti” or ”kiinteistönhuolto”. But from my experience they would just not care. If you are renting you could also try to complain to your land lord, but it is same story.

  2. I have the exactly same looking air vents in my apartment and with the similar problems. Nothing could be done, really (we own the apartment so really tried everything). I ended up investing in a good pair of noise blocking headphones.

  3. Typical Finnish apartment building. If it’s not an air vent, it’s the central heating pipes or something else, but you can always hear your neighbours turning light switches and farts. Nothing can be done.

  4. The real solution here is that your friends need to stop playing loud noises at night. They need to get headphones. And this isn’t just a benefit for you. If you can hear it, I can guarantee other parts of the building can to. This is completely normal, it doesn’t matter what, you can’t avoid hearing your neighbours in apartment buildings to some degree. At least your friends you can tell to STFU.

Since the rest of the apartment building can also hear your friends game and play music late at night ya’ll gonna get tossed out or reprimanded soon enough. Get ahead of the curve.

I lived in the Turku student village for years, and every fall it was the same thing. Kids moved out of their parents homes and would blast music and shit full volume at night because they have never had to learn to STFU at night. Would calm down a month or two of noise complaints later. But August/September was always hell for me sleepwise.

Parents! Teach your damn kids to be quiet after 22 damit.

  5. I’ve never had this problem. I usually prefer an old building with a good maintenance plan (ie a decent building company).

Many new buildings come with problems due to new shortcuts that construction companies hadn’t thought of back in the 80s, the shortcuts they took back then are known before buying because of how long time it’s passed.
