The UK government has published plans to get rid of parts of the post-Brexit deal it signed with the EU in 2020.
It wants to change the Northern Ireland Protocol to make it easier for some goods to flow from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
But the EU opposes the move, saying that going back on the deal breaches international law.
The UK government disputes this, arguing that the changes will mean the United Kingdom stays together.
The alterations are set out in the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, to be debated and voted on by Parliament.
A simple guide to the Brexit border problem
The government is promising to remove “unnecessary” paperwork on goods checks and that businesses in Northern Ireland will get the same tax breaks as those elsewhere in the UK.
The bill will also ensure that any trade disputes are resolved by “independent arbitration” and not by the European Court of Justice, it adds.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said it was “a reasonable, practical solution to the problems facing Northern Ireland” and that the UK could “only make progress through negotiations if the EU are willing to change the protocol itself”, adding: “At the moment they aren’t.”
“We are very clear that we’re acting in line with the law,” she said.
The government said it would prefer a “negotiated solution” with the EU that avoids the need for the bill to become law.
Brits wanting to have their cake and eat it too regarding Brexit? Shocking.
“Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said…”
Liz Truss pulling “a Boris” on Boris is at least amusing.
I’m waiting for 2025 to unleash my “even more stronk anti-EU” campaign on Truss.
This should be a clear signal to the world; the now liberated UK, freed from EU fascism, doesn’t feel the need to comply with deals they themselves agreed upon.
Boris determined to create more trouble with the EU to keep the headlines churning out “EU trade war with plucky UK” all to keep the distractions away from his constant illegal moves and non-stop corruption.
Got to place all the blame for the Brexit problem on the “evil EU” and how if it wasn’t for them everything would be sunny uplands and unicorns farting rainbows
Good, it’s the onlu way to save the peace process
And here I was thinking the UK is more reliable than Russia when it comes to international agreements.
UK: “I’m altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”
Also UK : “this deal is getting worse all the time!”
Watch the breakup of the UK in action.
How British
Another great day for Brexit Boris and the Brexiteers. They can all fuck off.
Good on them, following their example I shall unilaterally give myself a raise in work. Will tell payroll tomorrow.
This is the decade of “Don’t trust anything or anybody”.
It’s funny because one of the reasons Theresa May had to go was that she couldn’t present a better solution for Northern Ireland other than moving the border to the Irish Sea, which a lot of Unionists and backbench Brexiteers deemed unacceptable.
Then comes Boris and he finds a ‘solution’ to the problem that is to simply lie there would be no sea border. He then proceeds to present the exact same solution Theresa May had had as an ‘oven ready deal’ and gets a massive parliamentary majority.
And now here we are 3 years later and reality is catching up with his lies and what does he do to fix the problem? He proposes an unilateral change to an international treaty which he himself agreed to follow just a few years ago.
What reaction will that probably lead to from the EU side? Like when UK says, fuck that deal, we do what we want. And the EU says, well ok, so be it, but you’ll have to live with the consequences. How could those look like? What agreements might the EU feel free to disregard then?
