PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — The Peoria Unified School District governing board is meeting Thursday to discuss bringing in a third-party investigator amid allegations school officials knew about possible wrongdoing and failed to report the possible wrongdoing in a case where two teachers are accused of having sex with the same student.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is still reviewing the case. Right now, no criminal charges have been filed against either teacher.
The allegations against one of the former Centennial High School teachers, Haley Beck, have gone viral in part because her brother, Noah Beck, is a TikTok star and actor.
The apparent sex scandal was exposed only after the victim’s grandmother found an explicit video of another teacher at the same school, Angela Burlaka, on her grandson’s phone. Rumors circulated for months about what appeared to be an open secret before authorities got involved.
“Although he was 16, 17, 18, he was still a child when this began and this is child abuse,” said Katey McPherson, a youth mental health advocate.
According to the Peoria police report, after the investigation into Burlaka began, the principal told detectives he “received multiple complaints from students and staff” about Beck. The victim’s mother seemingly knew about the allegations, too.
Despite that, Peoria police said they are not pursuing charges against anyone who may have failed to meet mandatory reporter duties. District leaders previously said, “The information available did not meet the legal threshold for reasonable suspicion of abuse.”
The school board will now consider hiring a third-party investigator to look into “allegations regarding knowledge of inappropriate sexual misconduct at Centennial High School,” officials said. A spokesperson said this new action may or may not be related to the principal.
“The threshold is so low for having reasonable suspicion to either make a report or cause a report to be made that yes, there should be some accountability,” McPherson said. “I do think it’s a delayed response, but hopefully this will bring corrective action.”
