Boris Johnson could face another confidence vote ‘in six months’ as committee ‘looking at rule change’, says rebel MP

  1. Boris: changes rules in ministerial code to retrospectively protect himself from breaking the rules.

1922 Committee: changes rules to protect itself and the long term Tory party.

Boris: “you weren’t supposed to do that…”

  2. This seems like a plan to get a new pm just before an election… Who’s named hasn’t been dragged through the mud yet. Then once elected back to the tory ways.

Labour really need to look at getting fresh faces just before elections instead of having 4 years worth of bad press against the leader.

  3. A salty “throw your toys out of the pram” snap General Election is definitely on the cards if this starts happening and he’s staring down one of these twice a year on top of the general discontent.

If he’s going down he will take those backbenchers with slim majorities down with him, and if he somehow wins it he will turn around to the party and say “fuck you, I won twice”.

148 of his own MPs wanting him to not be there is a game changer. Could get messy.

Personally I still think Starmers leading question every Wednesday should be asking him when he’s going to resign.

  4. I personally believe that if the Conservative party had a decent possible leader in the background that Boris would have lost the confidence vote. Not having a better alternative allowed him to win.

Those in the cabinet are so worried about losing their place in possible future cabinet re-shuffles they will arse lick Boris all day and everyday.

Think it says a lot about the conservative party when their best option is Bumbling Boris.

  5. If they string this out long enough we can spend all summer talking about the internal Tory vote counts rather than partygate / cost of living crisis / actual issues

  6. There are what, 650 MPs? And now only 211 want him there. Not even 33% of the people in that room want him there. That’s pretty damming.

  7. Hopefully at the very least this tory bickering and backbiting is going to be remembered long after Johnson finally makes a run for it

  8. Johnson sees the role of PM as his divine right to hold, he will not let anyone jeopardise that, even his own party. He will do whatever he can to hold on to power and he will already be thinking of what he can do to re-solidify his grip on power.

  9. So they had their vote, didn’t get there way and now instead of trying to rebuild they sulk and want the rules changed? Gotta love politics.

  10. This is stupid, I don’t like Boris, but you can’t just change the rules to vote again otherwise there’s literally no point in having the rules.
Or voting for that matter if the votes are gonna be recast until you get the result you want.

  11. They played the same game with Theresa May. In her case she resigned before it came to that. Faced with someone with absolutely no shame, will they follow through now?

  12. The problem’s not just Boris, the entire House of Commons is an anachronism that causes misery for millions of people.

  13. So six months takes us to early December again. Swear to god if Johnson forces us through another December election.

  14. Changing the rules because the rules stop you doing what you want is the most Boris thing imaginable.

It’s almost poetic that it’s going to be used against Boris.
