There was [a thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/thenetherlands/comments/8llcgo/trying_to_make_a_nice_page_about_the_dutch_krul/) about this four years ago, from the person writing the Wikipedia article. I apparently read and interacted with that thread and then completely forgot in the mean time, because I was just as surprised now.

12. Als een immigrant leer je in de inburgeringscursus dat het heel fijn is als Mohamed Fatima helpt met het stofzuigen (geen grap), maar niemand vertelt je over de krul. Ik zag het voor het eerst op mijn eerste Nederlandse arbeidsovereenkomst, vanuit de context begreep ik dat het gewoon een vinkje is.

14. We use a cursive L for it in Hungary, it stands for “Láttam” – “I’ve seen it”. Some people use their monograms for the same.

16. The Dutch word “krul” has the same etymological root as the English word “curl”, I think.

    As a little kid in school, the “krul” meant a lot. It really is the symbol of approval.

    As far as I’m aware, it’s got nothing to do with the movie; [Krull](https://www.imdb.com/video/vi3165896985/?playlistId=tt0085811&ref_=tt_pr_ov_vi) , which is a bit of a shame.

17. It took me years to discover what this was. I would see it on my son’s school assignments and I assumed it was the teacher’s initials.

19. Hot daym, it has been so long I’ve seen one that I forgot they existed. And now you’re telling me it is mostly a Dutch symbol…sweet!

20. In my experience the flourish just was replaced by the intials ([paraaf](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraaf)), I can’t really recall using it outside of elementary or dealing with children in that context/agebracket.

23. As a Dutchy, TIL! I remember practicing and perfecting my own handwritten ‘Krul’ as a child. I was so proud when I got it right that I incorporated it in my autograph. Which I also practiced a lot those days. For, you know, when I got famous or something 😂. Still have it in my signature 25 years later…

24. Toen ik 7 was verhuisde ik van Engeland naar Nederland. Een van de eerste dagen op school, toen ik mijn gemaakte sommen terugkreeg met allemaal krullen erop, probeerde een klasgenoot mij ervan te overtuigen dat een krul slecht was. Ik vraag me tot op de dag van vandaag nog af wat zijn motivate daarvoor was.

29. Ik woon al een paar jaar in het buitenland en toch zet ik onbewust een krul neer in plaats van een vinkje zoals gewoonlijk is hier.

30. In Croatia, teachers would (in my time at least) give you a checkmark ✔️ for approval and their paraf for final signature on the end of your written exam.
