Preparations are under way for a new submarine cable linking Iceland to Scotland, with completion expected by 2030.
As reported by Vísir, the project is being led by Farice, which operates existing connections including FARICE-1, DANICE and ÍRIS.

The new cable, named AUÐUR after the historical figure Auður Þjúpúðga, is intended to replace the company’s oldest system, FARICE-1.
According to Farice, the cable will run from southern Iceland to a new landing point in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. From there, it will connect to major European telecommunications hubs such as London, Dublin and Amsterdam, as well as Nordic networks.
In a statement, the company said the development would expand network capacity and reduce data transit times between Iceland and Europe. A seabed survey is scheduled for summer 2027, ahead of construction.
The project is expected to be financed without direct state funding.
