I never understand laws like this, similar situation with the “upskirting” thing – surely these things are illegal anyway and carry serious sentencing guidelines too? Why the legal need to separate them?
Isn’t strangulation the form of abuse most strongly related to domestic murder? Maybe this can be a wakeup call for people

Is this strictly only for domestic violence situations?
You can still choke someone out in a self-defence situation and not have 5 years automatically slapped on you? I hope so, because it’s a lot less damaging than striking them or throwing them on the floor and potentially a more guaranteed way to escape (depending on the exact situation).
