Security forces sealed the sites and dispatched specialists to recover fragments for forensic analysis. The incidents heightened regional tensions and prompted diplomatic protests.
In Romania, for the third time this weekend, drone fragments were detected near the town of Luncavita and the village of Vekereni in Tulcea County, the Ministry of Defense said. According to the agency, the findings were recorded on Sunday, April 26. The area was cordoned off by interior ministry forces to ensure safety and restrict access to outsiders.
A joint group of experts from the Ministry of Defense and the Romanian Intelligence Service was dispatched to the scene to examine the fragments and remove them for further analysis. The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Constanța Court of Appeal. The Russian side has not yet commented on the Romanian authorities’ statement.
Earlier, on April 25, near the border with Ukraine, fragments of two drones were also found. One of them fell in the Galați area and caused property damage; no injuries were reported. The second drone was found near a farm close to the village of Vekereni in Tulcea County.
The Romanian side attributed the events to Russia, which overnight on April 25 launched a massive strike against Ukraine, including the Odesa region, that borders Romania.
The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Russian drones had previously flown into the country’s airspace and fallen on its territory; however, as Romanian President Nicușor Dan said, this is the first time a drone damaged property in Romania. Two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of the British Royal Air Force were scrambled at 2:00 a.m. from the Fetesti airbase; the pilots were given permission to engage the drones.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense strongly condemned Russia’s irresponsible actions and stressed that they pose a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea region.
