However, this system presents a critical flaw: it does not include future climate conditions in its assessments. A species may appear stable today but face total disappearance in the coming decades. Devastating projections for California

The research results are alarming. It is estimated that by the year 2125, these species could lose between 54% and 80% of their suitable habitat. Even by mid-century, losses would reach 41%. Iconic species like the blue oak and the western Joshua tree are in the line of fire, facing drastic declines in their distribution ranges. If climate risk thresholds are applied, the number of endangered species could increase sixfold, going from three to 18 species cataloged as critical.

In California’s hotter and drier regions, scientists are already documenting lower regenerative capacity and an unsettling increase in mortality.
