Israel is engulfed in death, both the visceral and the political. Young men continue to be sent to fight – and die – in an endless mega-war for reasons that either fail to serve Israel’s national security or effectively erode it. But these deaths – devastating, needless, irreversible – cannot be detached from Israel’s political trajectory. It’s no coincidence that the cumulative, epic weakening of Israel’s democracy has unfolded as Israeli society loses the sense that life itself is precious.
