Sajid Javid: Changing Tory leadership rules to allow quick new Boris Johnson confidence vote would be ‘grossly unfair’

  1. Boris has what, 6 months until another vote can be called? However long it is, expect things to get a lot worse as the Tories get as much done under Boris as possible, before replacing him and pretending that ‘it was all Bojo’s fault’ before the next election.

  2. NOT a NewsThump article.

    >But speaking to Sky News, Mr Javid said: “Of course they shouldn’t change the rules. There’s no need to change any rules because we’ve had the ballot…a clear, decisive result. And now we just get on with the job.”
    >
    >While he admitted he wasn’t an “expert” on the 1922 Committee’s rules, he added: “He’s got the confidence of the of the majority of MPs and that’s how this works. No Prime Minister I’ve known in the past has had the confidence of 100 per cent of MPs…there’s a democratic decision, and that’s why we’re going to get on with the job here for the years to come.
    >
    >Speaking later on Times Radio, he added: “Most people would think if you change the rules it would be grossly unfair, it would be the wrong thing to do, so I wouldn’t support that. If anyone wants to exercise the current rules, that’s their right.”

They got rid of May by telling her they were going to change the 1922 Committee rules if she didn’t go:

    >[May won](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jun/06/how-would-a-vote-of-no-confidence-in-boris-johnson-work) her confidence vote but was forced soon afterwards to announce a timetable for her departure, under the threat of a rule change and new vote.

  3. As unfair as say telling people they can’t say goodbye in person to their dying relatives they will never see again whilst you throw a party for Dave who is moving to a new job 500 yards away in Whitehall and will be back in for a briefing a week on thursday?

  4. He’s right, they should have a general election to prove to those noisy turncoats that the public still support good ole boozy Boris.

  5. It’s quite weird that anyone in the Johnson government would worry in the slightest about rules. They never follow them anyway.

  6. Remember when this government planned to change rules to protect a Tory MP caught breaking the rules? Remember how Boris recently planned to change the rules to protect himself?

Javid has no ground to complain about others doing the same to his team.
