Presenting the U.S. president with a shiny bell bearing the word Trump engraved upon it could have been a master stroke of soft power diplomacy by the King. Indeed, the artifact from the late submarine HMS Trump may yet keep the US president’s sentimental affection for some things British.
However, the bauble from the wartime boat, decommissioned and chopped up for scrap in 1971, does not appear to have had any mitigating effect on Trump’s public antics – or his international diplomacy.

New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Wednesday he would encourage King Charles to return the 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, with his comments coming during the monarch’s ongoing US visit.
“If I were to speak to the King separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor Diamond,” Mamdani, who is Indian American, said when asked at a press conference hours before a ceremony that commemorated victims of the deadly September 11 2001, attacks.
While Mamdani later met King Charles at the commemorative event, it remains unclear whether the issue was raised directly in their conversation. Buckingham Palace declined to comment, and Mamdani’s office did not confirm any discussion on the matter.

His comments have once again revived the long-running debate over the Koh-i-Noor diamond as India has previously repeatedly demanded that Britain return the 105-carat diamond.
Britain’s then colonial governor-general of India arranged for the huge diamond to be presented to Queen Victoria in 1850 after the East India Company had annexed the region of Punjab in 1849 and taken the diamond from a deposed Indian leader.
India has previously said the diamond was a “valued piece of art with strong roots in our nation’s history.”
The diamond’s possession by the British is seen by many Indians as a symbol of colonial atrocities during British rule.
The diamond has been previously owned by India’s Mughal emperors, shahs of Iran, emirs of Afghanistan, and Sikh maharajas, according to the Historic Royal Palaces charity.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a statement celebrating King Charles’ speech to Congress.
“I thank His Majesty King Charles III @RoyalFamily, the United Kingdom, and all valiant American hearts for this clarion call for unity in support of Ukraine across the Atlantic,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
“This is exactly what is needed to bring dignified and lasting peace to Ukraine and all of Europe. The people of Ukraine deeply appreciate all the support provided by the United Kingdom and the United States. Thank you,” he added.
The King discussed the war in Ukraine and called for unity as he spoke to a joint session of the U.S. Congress Tuesday afternoon.
“In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, when NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time and the United Nations Security Council was united in the face of terror, we answered the call together, as our people have done so for more than a century,” Charles said.
“Shoulder to shoulder through two world wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan, and moments that have defined our shared security. Today, Mr. Speaker, that same unyielding resolve is needed for the defense of Ukraine and her most courageous people,” he continued.
