They’re not and this isn’t America. We’ve a very different experience of the Catholic Church and it’s completely the opposite of counterculture here, it’s a very familiar, conservative culture that had us under its thumb for generations.
There’s no rebranding that.
The “trad cath” meme is about 2 years old
In the United States, a lot of white nationalist groups are embracing Catholicism. Nick Fuentes and his America First group comes to mind, they are really into Catholicism as the “true White European religion”. I guess those type of people can be consider counterculture, but it’s not any group I want to be apart of.
Why tf would the Irish times post this 🙄 The church is the worst thing to happen to this country.

They still wield loads of institutional power, but they think two decades of much-deserved bad reputation is enough to make them ‘countercultural’.

Sure the Baptists have the sex abuse scandal now.
I could be wrong, but I think some American Protestants think highly of the Catholic culture due to JFK and Catholics in the US being more progressive.
