APEX, N.C. (WBTV) – A man was arrested at a car wash in North Carolina on Wednesday after he allegedly made threats against President Donald Trump.
Police said they were called to the Tidal Wave Auto Spa on Lake Pine Drive in the town of Apex, around 2:30 p.m. on April 29.
Apex police alleged 41-year-old Daniel Rodney Swain “was making threats directed toward the president,” and had threatening messages written on the outside of his SUV. Pictures showed white marker on several of the vehicle’s windows.
Officers said they believed Swain was driving from South Carolina — where he lives — to Washington, D.C. He was detained by police and they immediately notified the U.S. Secret Service of the situation on Wednesday.
A state bomb squad was called in to help. Police said the SUV was checked for explosives out of “precaution and standard procedure.”
Swain was subsequently arrested and was taken to the Wake County jail. He apparently meth with him, according to his arrest warrant. He was charged with:
Possession of methamphetamineResisting a public officerFictious license plate
It was not immediately clear if Swain was facing any federal charges.
Initial records showed Swain was denied bond by a magistrate, was described as “an escape risk,” and had a federal detainer on him. He was due in Wake County court the afternoon of Thursday, April 30.
Swain’s arrest came just days after a gunman barged into an April 25 dinner Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance were attending. That gunman — Cole Tomas Allen — was arrested before anyone was hurt. Allen was charged with attempted assassination.
