With the summer coming and the weather getting warmer I was thinking of buying my mam one of these ([https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/blaupunkt-air-cooler-cube-368417](https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/blaupunkt-air-cooler-cube-368417))

They cost around €35 in Homesavers. There’s no reviews online so I don’t know if they’re any good or not. It’s just too keep the sitting room cool for her during the hotter days and evenings.

  1. Not much use in Ireland. They cool your room by adding water to the air. That doesn’t work well because Ireland has very high humidity.

  2. It’s an evaporative cooler (aka a swamp cooler). The lowest temperature it can reach is the wet bulb temperature which is a function of relative humidity. Most of this country is too humid for this type of cooler to get more than 2-3 degrees below ambient temperature. You will be mostly blowing damp air around. They work really well in deserts, though.

You’d probably be better off with a conventional fan. If you need lower temperatures, you can get small air conditioners but you’ll be paying several hundred to a thousand Euro.

  3. If it doesn’t have a condenser in it that uses refrigerant to cool the air it takes in: it won’t do a thing.

Fans move air around. That little box will moisten the air.

An air conditioner actually cools air.

So you’ve gotta take the plunge and spend a few hundred on a portable air conditioner. Or just deal with the heat when it hits us.
