Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous stated in an interview with REAL FM 97.8 that authorities will keep the application process open for 15 days. Officials expected to complete the hiring process within four to six months.
The government introduced the permanent roles to further strengthen the National Health System and address staffing needs nationwide.
The deputy minister said the public health system currently employs more staff than ever before, including doctors, nurses, and other essential personnel such as technologists and hospital support workers.
He added that authorities planned 5,000 permanent hires and an additional 3,000 auxiliary staff positions within the year. After accounting for retirements and departures, the system would see a net increase of around 3,000 staff members compared to previous years.
Addressing hospital overcrowding and the use of temporary beds, he said the issue had been largely resolved across most hospitals, with the main exception being Attikon Hospital. He noted that three hospitals in Attica still occasionally used temporary beds for short periods, but conditions had significantly improved.
He highlighted that Evangelismos Hospital, once heavily affected by overcrowding, no longer used temporary beds.
Regarding Attikon Hospital, he said authorities had implemented a targeted plan to resolve the issue. A new building currently under construction would free up 50 beds now used for doctor accommodation, with the plan expected to deliver results within approximately 12 months.
