India’s campaign came to an end on April 27, after a 0–5 defeat to China in their final Group A tie.
It is a proud moment for Northeast India as two of its badminton stars, Isharani Baruah from Assam and Priya Kongjengbam from Manipur, represented India at the Uber Cup Finals 2026 being held in Horsens, Denmark, from 24 April–3 May.

In this match, both Isharani Baruah and Priya Kongjengbam featured but were unable to secure a win.
Isharani put up a strong challenge in the women’s singles, going down 22–20, 21–13 against Chen Yufei, while Priya, partnering Shruti Mishra in women’s doubles, lost 21–11, 21–8 to the Chinese pair Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning.
Earlier in the group stage, India registered a solitary team victory against Ukraine but suffered defeats against Denmark and China, leading to their exit from the tournament after finishing third in the group.
Despite the results, their participation marks a significant milestone and highlights the growing presence of Northeast talent on the international badminton stage.
Both athletes are being celebrated as inspirations in the region, having risen from humble beginnings in small towns to compete internationally.
Priya Kongjengbam, in particular, has made history as the first woman from her background to represent India at the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships.
In an interview with Assam-based Dr. K Zaman Ahmed, a retired anaesthesiologist and a resident of Horsens, Baruah and Kongjengbam shared their experience.
They said, “We feel fortunate and truly blessed to be guided and mentored by P. V. Sindhu. She continues to inspire us and the entire team.”
