Am I missing something here? Where are they pulling 600% from? What’s the base year and comparator figures?
>The number of people who have applied for asylum in Ireland in the first five months of 2022 is close to 5,000, which is almost twice the total of 2,649 for the entirety of 2021.
2649 by 6 would be 15k, but the number they’re saying for five months is (slightly less than) 1k a month? 1k a month for a year doesn’t get you to 15k. Unless there’s some clump not mentioned there (perhaps applying for other kinds of international protection?)
If it is 2021, seems like you should show data from some other years to make sure the whole pandemic thing isn’t leading to some wonky figures.

They need to cop on and actually put in place a functioning system that gets people processed asap like the Netherlands. Long term direct provision and making people wait forever to have their claims processed isn’t good for asylum seekers or the State. They need a dedicated High Court judge to hear judicial reviews of asylum decisions to unclog the system and make it functional
We’ve seen how asylum seekers become the boogy men in the rest of Europe and I can see it so easily happening in Ireland if they don’t actually reform the system
I fear it is going to end very badly, Taking is ~15,000 people from the 3rd world countries in a year is going to create huge pressure on all social services ( these people have nothing) and indirectly increase the cost of renting/housing by dramatically reducing supply and the government will have to purchase more homes rapidly to house these people.
We cannot trust our government to deal with this asylum seeker issue, they are simply too weak. They will let them all in given the chance.
If you’re running from war , you don’t get to pick your country of refuge….why are they taking boats from France ? ….no one country can accept these numbers . Social unrest will follow ….take a peak at Sweden some time.
I always forget how bigoted this sub is but this thread is a good reminder.
Unpopular opinion but the UK are right. The BBC had a report from Calais and they themselves it was full of men and when asked why they wanted to go to UK they said there was more opportunities there. They are economic migrants. If you want to come for a better life, then you need to apply the legal route as it’s not possible for everyone to live here.
One thing I agree with that the UK has done. How many should we welcome in before we can’t sustain ourselves? Social welfare payments, housing … sorry but I feel part of the group coming here are free loading and looking for all them nice new social houses being built and a weekly payout. No thank you
Good more population for us that send them to Rwanda policy is fucked up.
Ach, we’re at it again. Sorry lads, we just cant help our selves.
It’s interesting to see the emergence, in this thread and in real life, a certain narrative that seeks to pin the housing shortage on a huge influx of migrants (usually asylum seekers).
It’s bollocks of course. Not long ago we were going to be overwhelmed by Syrians, and before that Romanians, and before that Poles. Yet here we still are. The point is the push and pull factors that determine migration are far more complex than what is being portrayed in these comments
No coincidence that Roderic O’Gorman has promised every asylum seeker own door accommodation within four months of them setting foot on Irish soil. Good job we have plenty of houses to go around for everyone.
I’m just waiting for the first boats to start coming from holyhead or western Scotland into the island of Ireland. Boats from calais were unheard of a few years ago. Now they’re almost a daily event.
