Italy has a lot, and I mean A Lot of Putin Supporters who are Anti-America and Anti-NATO, they praise Putin and hail his regime as the Perfect Land… (from citizens to politicians, an example: parties like Lega and Fratelli d’Italia have always been praising Putin and his regime).
Italy has a fragile democracy which can very quickly change course. A very stagnant economy which is surprisingly vulnerable to the current situation. Low level of English proficiency which makes it more vulnerable to Russian propaganda.
Russia probably views it as one of the countries that could be swayed by external pressure.
I love Italy, but this aspect of Italy I don’t know about and I feel like I do not want to know more about it.
It was wooing Italy with some success for decades. USSR allowed a lot of Italian movies to be shown, this wouldn’t happen if there were no ties.
He’s been targeting it for years now. Wherever the EU isn’t working the best for a country, there will be Putin to try and break it apart.
Italy has a lot of Euroskepticism, much of it understandable, so he will fan those flames.
