Where would you want to be if everyone’s worst nightmare becomes reality? In the event of a nuclear exchange, there are 12 locations where you would stand the best chance at survival and 4 destinations you would want to avoid at all costs.

Survival experts will tell you that if a nuclear exchange with an enemy (or enemies) were to occur, you would want to be as far away from large population areas as possible, but be in an area that has access to critical supplies like water and hard shelters. Missouri is fortunate to have many natural resources like the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, lots of heavily-forested regions and only a few large population centers. With that in mind, here are the 12 safest places during a nuclear war in Missouri.

What Missouri places would you want to avoid at all costs?

It’s not really rocket science (no nuclear missile pun intended) to understand that you wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the big cities in Missouri, the state capital or any military bases like Whiteman or Fort Leonard Wood. St. Louis, in particular, is considered a high value nuclear target for many reasons including the fact that it’s a key transportation portal connecting east to west next to the Mississippi River not to mention that it’s a major hub for aerospace and airplane manufacturing.

Missouri’s strategic location is one of the reasons it was one of the places used as a backdrop for the famous apocalyptic movie “The Day After”. The hope is that no country ever takes the drastic step of escalating a conflict to the nuclear level. The sad truth is ultimately there would be no place in Missouri (or anywhere else) that would be a “good” place to be during a nuclear war. The entire country would become a nightmare. Let’s hope that stays in the realm of made-for-TV movies and never reality.
