It’s unsettling when the secretary of defense (or is it war?) appears before Congress, chastises its members for not supporting a war they never voted for, and labels those supposedly unsupportive members as the real adversary (“Hegseth berates critics of war with Iran,” Page A2, April 30). Given that Congress has the sole authority to declare war, this situation would be laughable if it weren’t in blatant violation of the Constitution and causing so much grief around the world.

If President Trump and his sycophantic secretary want congressional support for their actions, perhaps they should have consulted with Congress before launching bombs and missiles toward Iran and telling the Iranian people to be ready to rise up and reclaim their country. Congress has every right to question the basis for this action, but it’s Trump, not Hegseth, who should be called to answer.
