Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, affirmed that the visit of Pope Leo XIV reinforces Algeria’s natural position as a reliable intermediary.
During his regular meeting with national press representatives, broadcast on national television and radio Saturday evening, the President of the Republic said that the Sovereign Pontiff’s visit “places Algeria in its natural position” as an “honest intermediary, which it has always been,” emphasizing its role in dialogue between religions and bringing peoples together.
The President of the Republic also expressed his gratitude to the Pope, on behalf of the Algerian people and State, for accepting the invitation to visit Algeria, noting that the visit “has enabled clearing up many ambiguities” and “restore Algeria to its rightful place.” The Pope also hailed Algeria as a Mediterranean country “open to all cultures and religions” and one “that has never persecuted other religions,” President Tebboune recalled.
The President of the Republic further noted that his earlier meeting with the Pope at the Vatican served as “the catalyst for this momentum,” adding that the initiative “was not welcomed by everyone.”
