BBC edits out boos from replay of Johnson’s arrival at Jubilee event – not the first time they’ve covered for him

  1. Marina Purkiss’ mini twitter thread allows the viewer to compare how [the coverage changed](https://nitter.net/MarinaPurkiss/status/1533005291163467778).

The booing is indeed much less audible on the edited clip.

But far more interesting than that, I thought, the complete removal of Jane Hill’s live commentary on Johnson’s arrival:

    > “There is really quite a lot of booing. Actually [a substantial amount.](https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/queens-jubilee-boris-johnson-booed_uk_6299eddbe4b0b1100a63cfac) That’s quite a moment,”

This was, as shown by [subsequent press coverage](https://www.google.com/search?q=%22substantial+amount%22+%22booing%22&tbs=cdr%3A1%2Ccd_min%3A6%2F3%2F2022%2Ccd_max%3A6%2F5%2F2022), the most notable aspect of the entire proceedings. Hill’s *a substantial amount* was the quote of the day.

Clearly an editorial decision was taken to elide this newsworthy coverage from their later record of the event, and that would be a far better topic for the BBC’s self examination than squabbling over audio feeds and sound processing.

This cannot be “just down to standard editing practice”.
It can only be a deliberate, intentional attempt to distort and conceal reality.

(Tried to post [the *National*’s version](https://www.reddit.com/r/unitedkingdom/comments/v58h1n/bbc_responds_to_claims_it_edited_boris_johnson/) of this story, but doesn’t seem to have made it through the queue. Deleted it now to avoid duplication.)

  2. BBC does not want the licence fee decriminalised, or abolished altogether. Which would be revenge if such things as the boos were not removed.

Remember the boycott of the Today programme on Radio 4, or the banishment of Channel 4 from press conferences?

  3. Scary how a lot of people will see the BBC feed, and then be shown the unedited events and a lot will stand firm the BBC version is real. Crazy how everyone in this country lives in two different versions of the same country simultaneously.

  4. Are people really surprised at Boris being booed? At the Golden jubilee before the whole parade, flyover etc, there was a dinner at Mansion House. Big screens etc and every time Tone appeared – deafening boos. And he was a pretty popular PM at the time.

Politicians routinely get booed, it is healthy that they do, and entirely normal. I can think of occasions when every PM from Harold Wilson onwards has had an earful. Since when have people thought that PMs are politely applauded wherever they go?

  5. Her next post on same thread is:

“I’m told by some credible people that this may just be down to standard editing practice If that’s the case, I’m very happy to be proved wrong Sadly the BBC has form here, hence the distrust We’ve seen the Brexit word almost banned, not forgetting this: click original post for link”

  6. Wait… they replayed a clip of him while having the audio from their current live feed talking over the clip. The Boris clip was just b-roll.

Am I missing something? The general crowd noise is from the live feed, right? I’m not sure this was intentional? Not that I care to defend the BBC, I just don’t really understand how we can’t see that the audio is currently live feed and b-roll plays over live feed all the time with live events.

    Correct me if I’m wrong?

  7. They’re right this isn’t the first time at all!

I recall something similar happening prior to the last election, when Johnson laid a wreath upside down at the cenotaph during Remembrance Sunday, the BBC used old archival footage of him as London Mayor rather than show his error.

Closer to the election itself the BBC edited out people laughing at his comments during the TV debates.

  8. Is this … is this serious?

This isn’t a replay of the live event with altered audio, it’s a clip being shown while someone is doing an interview, of course there’s no booing – THE ORIGINAL AUDIO ISN’T PLAYING, or if it is, it’s not the primary feed. It wasn’t trying to present as the original audio, it’s a replay of prior events – this is literally done every time there’s a large all day news event.

This is just buffoonery of the highest order. Do you know how I know Boris got boo’d? I watched a clip of it on the BBC website *hours* after it happened.

Let’s be clear. Boris and the Tories can fuck right off. But this is the most ridiculous circlejerk ‘article’ I’ve read in a good whole. Congrats.

  9. Looks like injecting those Pro Tory executives into key positions within the BBC has worked wonders for the Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda.

  10. Aren’t the bbc meant to be neutral because they get their money from the actual British public. Thankfully I have never paid for a tv license and won’t (disappears in 5 years thankfully)

  11. Censorship at its finest. When murderous regimes like China and Russia do it they can simply point to British censorship and say they lead the world in it.

  12. It’s fucking dystopian at this point. Lying, and lying about lying has become the norm and it’s another nail in the coffin of British democracy. When those in power use the media to REWRITE actual events to reflect their own agenda that is state propaganda and fascism in the flesh. We are on a slippery slope. The double-think is real and it’s dangerous.

  13. Tbh I’ve avoided all uk news because of the bits I’ve seen it’s a royal fuckfest of the most arselicking on par with North Korea dear leader shite.

  14. Hasn’t this only happened because they are replaying the footage while continuing their conversation, so the original audio wasn’t replayed over them. This is usually what they do at events like this, there is so much standing around and chatting nonsense, they end up replaying key moments of the day over as a sort of B roll footage while the presenters keep talking.

  15. Fuck me, they really are pulling out all the stops to deny how shit he is. It’s as if Joffrey Baratheon lived past his teens and grew into a Bullingdon Club sex-pest with oversized eyelids.

I wonder if the BBC having to edit out the boos is enough to get Nadine Dorries to admit there weren’t more cheers than boos.

  16. No, someone was talking over the footage so it had to be turned down. I can still clearly hear the booing. And they dont typically keep live commentary.

  17. I read an article earlier on BBC’s app. It claimed that the police tasered a man, causing him to fall into the river, critically injuring him.

4 hours later and a bystander video shows that he jumped off the bridge after being tasered.

  18. Whoever wrote that article and the vast majority of comments here are idiotic.

The audio isn’t the original, as it’s a different shot using the VT.

    The booing is clearly audible.

The BBC are biased, but this isn’t noteworthy.

  19. I was at the party at the palace last night. When he arrived, those boo’s were loud as fuck in the crowd (including myself I might add) He really was not welcome there last night.

  20. Odd though when you consider how the tories are trying to defund and undermine them. Better to get them out in 2024 so Labour are in power when the next charter comes for renewal.

  21. the BBC’s board is chosen by the government.

4 members of the board are chosen by the government

and then the other 10 members are chosen by those 4 members.
