When did Irish news become so engrossed in American issues? Seems like every headline now is picked straight from Fox news with the usual ‘gotcha’topics like racism and lgbtq issues. What does
>engages in racial profiling
Actually mean in terms of arrests and incarceration statistics?
Well that’s embarassing. And not just for the Gardai.
Irish domestic policing issues are being brought to the fucking *United Nations*.
How useless would you have to be as a minister or member of government for something like that to happen?
EDIT : Or maybe it’s all the Americans fault lol
Just to clarify …are they talking about when they stop buses coming across the border and check for foreign nationals that they ignore the pasty freckle folk and ask those who might not look like their 18th generation Cavan?
I mean yeah that’s profiling I suppose.
But its hardly mississippi burning.
Just check everyone on the bus so. It’ll take ten times a long than checking than checking the one lad with dark skin but if that’s what it takes to defeat racism everyone will just have to wait
It’s embarassing that some people on this sub seem to think the gardai are like a small town police deptartment in alabama
If you read the article the police stuff is just a small part of 100 recommendations that include:
>These include “the ongoing failure of the State to take full accountability for Ireland’s long and dark history of institutional abuse, the continuing and widespread discrimination faced by Travellers, [and] ongoing deficiencies in the State’s response to gender- based violence”.
and also
>IHREC also recommended the extension of gender quotas for elections, to ensure at least 40pc of election candidates are women, and measures to support the political participation of under-represented groups.
It’s all pretty standard Human RIghts advocacy group stuff
I think if everyone seen what the over 100 recommendations are from the report then it might make the conversation more constructive.
Well I for one am shocked that someone who is being paid to tackle an issue, is making sure that there appears to be an issue to tackle.
“• The Commission recommends that the State prioritise legislation through amendments to the Garda Síochána (Powers) Bill to define and prohibit racial profiling; and to include an express requirement to record the racial and ethnic origin of a person being stopped and searched, and the location at which the power is exercised.
• The Commission recommends that the Garda Síochána (Digital Recording) Bill should prescribe the criteria for the selection of locations where CCTV is to be installed in order to safeguard against blanket surveillance of certain communities.”
So lets get this straight. If an area has a high rate of crime its common sense to put in CCTV right? If the area is mostly black its suddenly racist? Even if its not those people doing it all but some Irish teens fucking around causing trouble?
Why re we listening to American left wing political talking points with regard to our policing?
Lol the UN, clown car organisation. It would wanna investigate it’s own human rights council
I don’t really like the Gardai because they tend to fucking profile me for the car I drive but for an article with the headline like this to not provide any sources smells like a load of bullshit.
Well when certain minority “races” cause lots of social and criminal issues due to their “culture”. Of course you’re going to profile against them.
Statistics are real and predictable…
is anyone surprised?
The Gardaí need to be replaced by an Irish controlled police force before we can even think about these things.
r/ireland drinking game: any time someone mentions America in relation to racism, take a shot.
Disclaimer: this will kill you
Not surprised.
When I was in college in Dublin, a good portion of my class was invited to some rooftop party in city center. There was a mix of North Americans and Irish. The Garda broke up the party, kicked everyone out, but then isolated my Egyptian friend (only brown person there) and started grilling him and threatening to revoke his visa. He did not do anything different than the rest of us and was walking out with us. I even stood by the Garda yelling at him and she never even turned to acknowledge me or give out to me, even though I am foreign as well, except I’m as pale as the rest of you.
The fake manufactured outrage doesn’t seem to work as well in Europe which is good.
Several friends of mine have been pulled off the bus to Dublin and left stranded in Newry. Total disgrace
