MURRAY — A new memorial honoring military working dogs was unveiled Saturday morning at the Veterans Memorial in Chestnut Park, paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of canines like Thor, a bomb-sniffing dog who served two tours in Afghanistan.
Hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6291, the brief ceremony recognized all military working dogs (MWD) dating back to World War I while placing special emphasis on Thor, a German shepherd who died in October 2023 at age 14. Post 6291 Commander RJ Owens said the addition of the War Dog Memorial had been under consideration for several years before Saturday’s event. He said that other than the names that adorn the memorial bricks on the walkway surrounding the monument, the addition was the first new feature since the Veterans Memorial was built in 2010.
