This i encountered during my holyday.
I dont know or understand Cyprus history..
Ps. Any tips for a first time Cyprus tourist?
Its not a stupid barricade, its the border between Cyprus and the pseudo-state of North Cyprus, a turkish Puppet regime. Its border is like that because:
TL,DR: Greece wanted to unite with Cyprus, Cypriots want to unite with Greece, Greece sends agents to Remove Cypriot Leader, they succeed but some Turkish civilians were killed by the Agents, Turkey sees it as a reason to invade the island, it invades the island, takes a small part of it. Turkey then (with possible covert NATO and CIA support), invades the rest of the island, taking 1/3 of it (the entire north side), NATO sets up a ceasefire zone to stop hostilities and ensure that turkey gets what it wants. This barricade is the ceasefire zone.
Turkey was supposed to stay only for a little while, they ended up not staying there for a little while, set up their own puppet government and, against Article 49, sixth paragraph, of the 1949 Geneva Convention, transferred parts of its own civilian population into the territory to inflate the number of Turks living there. And, against Article 8 of the geneva convention, killed around 2.000 greeks fleeing from the north to the south of the island. As well as going against Rule 50 of the geneva convention, which prohibits the Destruction and Seizure of Property of an occupied Nation, and populating the seized Greek property with Article 49 breaking civilians from Mainland Turkey.
And now we are here, the island is still occupied, and the people are still divided. This all culminates to the barrier you see in front of you
Perhaps a better title would have been;
‘Interesting’ border dividing the city Nicosia.
The real question, as I understand it, is : with this kind of inexistent protection, why a “German uprising” hasn’t occur yet to destroy it and to start the reunification ? And the answer, unfortunately, is because the majority of the population does not really want it…
Plant some ganja seeds man in these huge green barrels, now it’s the perfect time of the season. End of September we ll see some people pretty united 😉
Let’s gooooooo
A common scenery from the last divided capital of Europe…
