A Johnston elementary school was evacuated Monday morning due to a gas smell.The Johnston Community School District confirmed to KCCI that staff at Horizon Elementary School reported a gas smell in the building shortly before 8 a.m. Monday. JOHNSTON, Iowa —

A Johnston elementary school was evacuated Monday morning due to a gas smell.

The Johnston Community School District confirmed to KCCI that staff at Horizon Elementary School reported a gas smell in the building shortly before 8 a.m. Monday. Staff informed MidAmerican Energy about the smell, and MidAmerican Energy conducted an inspection.

Students and staff were cleared to return to the building shortly before 9 a.m., according to the district.

Students were directed toward a designated evacuation location during the inspection.
