Adam McCarty was granted bail with conditions, including no contact with the alleged victim and he must stay at least 25 metres away from places where she could be

A captain with Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services was charged in an alleged assault against a woman over the weekend.

Adam McCarty, 46, appeared before Justice of the Peace Troy Rossignol on Sunday in Weekend and Statutory Holiday court to face the single charge of assault.

McCarty’s arrest stemmed from an incident that court documents say happened in the Sault on Sunday.

The allegation has not been tested in court and McCarty is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Rossignol released McCarty on $1,000 bail on Sunday, with conditions that include no contact with the alleged victim and that he may not be within 25 metres of anywhere he knows the victim to be.

He is also prohibited from possessing any weapon, as defined under the Criminal Code of Canada.

McCarty, who earned more than $155,000 last year according to the Sunshine List, is represented by Sudbury lawyer John Saftic.

On Monday, SooToday reached out to the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services to ask if McCarty is on active duty while facing the charge.

“The city does not comment on individual personnel matters, including employment status, leave, or disciplinary issues,” said Tessa Vecchio, corporate communications officer with the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

McCarty’s next court appearance for this charge will be on June 3 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Court records show McCarty was convicted in Blind River for a previous assault charge in 2020.
