The overhaul, the first in more than a decade, will introduce new designs based on two themes: European culture and nature.

Under the cultural theme, Curie could feature on a €20 note, potentially depicted in a classroom setting to highlight education and scientific achievement.

Other figures under consideration include composer Ludwig van Beethoven, artist Leonardo da Vinci, writer Miguel de Cervantes, opera singer Maria Callas and peace activist Bertha von Suttner.

Each would be paired with scenes reflecting their cultural impact.

An alternative design theme, centred on rivers and birds, would instead focus on Europe’s natural heritage, symbolising unity beyond borders.

The redesign process includes public consultation and expert input, with more than 360,000 people already contributing to early stages.

A final decision on the designs is expected by the end of 2026, with the new notes likely to enter circulation several years later.
